My Journey Through Culture Shock & Homesickness

I have been a part of two study abroad programs now., Studying abroad is something that I always wanted to do., I found the best way to handle everything was to just confide in my family and the friends I made while abroad about the stress and loneliness I felt., The trick basically was making a little piece of my old home in my new home -- including making sure to still keep in contact with my family and friends back home as well as becoming closer with my new friends and host family in my Spain., Most of all, I missed my friends, and I was 1000% that annoying study abroad kid who talked about Spain and how much I missed being abroad.

Falling in Love with More than One City

It was in that moment, while I sat there in the bus sharing one of the ear-buds of my iPod with the girl sitting next to me, that I realized that the last month of me continually getting lost throughout Granada was actually me continually getting lost in Granada with a group of people who would become some of best friends., Friends with whom I would get to spend the rest of my time abroad!, Although the tour was in Spanish, she did a very good job of making sure that we all understood exactly what was going on throughout the entire tour., After this excursion, I knew that the love I had for Granada was only going to keep extending into the entirety of Andalusia as I experienced the many more excursions to come during my time abroad in Spain., Flowers and pottery that cover the walls of the city Art randomly painted on the side of a building My friends and I after a successful excursion Brady Greenwalt is the Spring 2015 CEA MOJO in Granada, Spain.

From the MTA to the Tube: A New Yorker's First Impressions of London's Transit System

I was particularly impressed by the exterior design of many of the tube stations - instead of being hidden away underground like they are in New York, London's tube stations stand tall on the streets of the city with their instantly recognizable red circle, making navigation far easier., New York's subway system is only now beginning to incorporate these kinds of cars into their own network, though they aren't due to start running for many more months Adjusting to London's tube system has been one of the most enjoyable (and at times humbling) experiences I have had during my time in London thus far: paying attention to the nuanced differences between the two systems has gone a long way towards making me feel like a confident Londoner., This simple gesture goes a long way to show the ways in which the Underground system is beginning to do the work of making their spaces more accessible and queer-friendly Alas, the tube is not without its imperfections: the lack of 24/7 service has been particularly hard to adjust to, although they have recently added all-night service on weekends, and the remarkably efficient bus system continues to run all the time., Encountering this woman and her dog on the tube remains one of my favorite moments of my abroad experience so far., It was late at night, I was on my way home with friends, and (with the owner's permission) we fed the dog fries from a McDonald's we had stopped at earlier.

As I round out the semester here studying abroad in Madrid, there are many things I’ve achieved that weren’t on my bucket list., One of the main goals of my time abroad was to make Madrid feel like home., Some small but very important skills that my friends and I have learned and embraced (whether we wanted to or not) was how to stretch every dime when traveling, and how to keep up with schoolwork when we’re in a different country almost every weekend., Since we have to do something special every day in order to make our time here count, my friends and I are always out walking around and exploring different parts of the city., Understanding the art and architecture of Madrid was a huge milestone toward making this bustling city feel like it’s my neighborhood.

Meeting Argentina through Wide Eyes

Well, it appears that there actually is a “study” to “study abroad.”, I know people from all over the world and I’m even friends with Argentines., By making friends from all over and talking to my CEA friends’ homestay families, I’ve now done things like: • Go to an 85-year-old Spaniard’s birthday party • Go to a REAL milonga – one that’s built into someone’s house like they used to be in the beginnings of tango • See sights that I’d only dreamed of (Iguazu Falls, the Andes, etc.), And while I’m possibly becoming the widest study abroad student in the world, thanks to my high intake of Argentina’s delicious empanadas, I plan on continuing to do my study abroad time up big too!, Caroline Atwood is currently studying abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Disconnect for FACE: Lessons from the French Alps

Personally, I'm indifferent to the reasons why we do it, but will always adamantly encourage other students to study abroad and to do so with worldly intentions., Ultimately, the quality of one’s study abroad experience comes down to the traveler them self., When we travel abroad we don’t even expect to be out of touch with family and friends, not really., Though the actual FACE program is unique to the French Alps, its principals benefits can (and should) be observed by anyone abroad., By making local recipes, you gain an appreciation of the time and process it takes to create a dish, while garnering knowledge of the ingredients required to produce it.

Three Weeks in Paris, One Important Lesson

When it came to study abroad in Paris the planning continued: where will I get class credit, where are my friends going, where can I speak the language, how easy is it to travel, and how can I avoid bankrupting my parents?, I tried making myself a to-do list: get school supplies, go grocery shopping, book flights., They say, “Life happens while you’re making plans.”, This has never rung more true than it has abroad., While we’re making plans for our next activity, life is happening during our meal in Paris.
